RI Ranked 5th Most Energy Efficient State in U.S.

Rhode Island has been ranked as the fifth most energy efficient state in the country, according to a recent study done by Wallethub.

"According to a McKinsey & Company report, an estimated $520 billion initial investment on energy-efficiency measures could save the economy more than $1.2 trillion in the future and potentially reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 1.1 gigatons — “the equivalent of taking the entire U.S. fleet of passenger vehicles and light trucks off the roads," said WalletHub.

Rhode Island ranks ninth in home energy efficiency and fourth in car energy efficiency.

The Rankings

Rhode Island ranks fifth behind Minnesota and Vermont at three and four, while ranking ahead of Wisconsin and Massachusetts at six and seven.

New York is ranked as the most energy efficient state, while South Carolina is ranked as the least energy efficient state.

Alaska and Hawaii were excluded from the analysis.

The Method

To determine the most energy-efficient states, WalletHub’s analysts compared 48 states across two key dimensions, including “Home Energy Efficiency” and “Car Energy Efficiency.”

They obtained the former by calculating the ratio of total residential energy consumption to annual degree days. For the latter, they divided the annual vehicle miles driven by gallons of gasoline consumed to determine vehicle-fuel efficiency and measured annual vehicle miles driven per capita to determine transportation efficiency.

Each dimension was weighted proportionally to reflect national consumption patterns and graded on a 100-point scale, with 100 representing optimal energy efficiency.

They then calculated overall scores for each state and used the result to construct the final rankings.

Home Energy Efficiency – Total Points: 55

  • Home Energy Efficiency = Total Residential Energy Consumption per Capita / Annual Degree Days

Car Energy Efficiency – Total Points: 45

  • Vehicle-Fuel Efficiency = Annual Vehicle Miles Driven / Gallons of Gasoline Consumed
  • Transportation Efficiency = Annual Vehicle Miles Driven per Capita
