RI Tourism Features Crawfish in Seafood Promo

Crawfish is featured in Rhode Island tourism's promotion for seafood
Nothing says Rhode Island seafood like a big basket of crawfish -- well, that is what Rhode Island's tourism folks say.

At Commerce RI, tourism professionals posted a promotion on Instagram featuring “Food and Drink Festivals" in Rhode Island.

The post proclaims, “Our Seafood Is All That,” with an arrow pointing to a big basket of crawfish.

The "All That" is a reference to Rhode Island's new tourism campaign produced by the Florida advertising agency Zimmerman.

Crawfish?

Yes, there are crawfish in Rhode Island and they are one of the items available at the Charlestown Seafood Festival.

But crawfish, or crayfish, are better known as a seafood delicacy in Louisiana.

Crawfish are not on the menu at Matunuck Oyster Bar, The Black Pearl in Newport, or Hemenway’s Restaurant in Providence.

What are on those famous seafood restaurant menus are popular Rhode Island seafood items like fresh oysters, lobster and clam cakes.

Why Crawfish

“The post you are referring to was meant to promote exactly that, Rhode Island food and drink festivals such as the Charlestown Seafood Festival in Charlestown, Rhode Island, and locally sourced foods as well as locally prepared foods brought in that highlight our diverse culinary scene. In fact, it was one of several slides promoting various festivals across the state,” said Matthew Touchette, spokesperson at Commerce RI.

He said the social media post was not produced by Commerce’s tourism ad agency — Zimmerman.

The work by the Florida agency has been criticized for its effectiveness and Commerce has been criticized for using an out-of-state agency over Rhode Island businesses.
