Tech Layoffs Hitting Again — Meta, Lyft and Media Companies

The third major round of layoffs is now hitting Facebook’s parent Meta.

In the fall, the company laid off 11,000 employees and then, at the beginning of this year, another 10,000 workers.

Now, Meta is in the midst of laying off another 6,000. Combined — the three rounds of layoffs total more than one-quarter of the company’s workforce.

Other tech companies have reported recent downsizing efforts. 

A spokesperson for Lyft declined to comment on the specific number of cuts to CNBC, but the Wall Street Journal reported that the company would lay off at least 1,200 workers, or around 30% of its 4,000-person workforce.

And, this week, BuzzFeed announced it was eliminating its award-winning news division and causing layoffs totaling nearly 200.

In 2021, BuzzFeed won a Pulitzer prize for its journalism. BuzzFeed News won for its innovative series exposing China’s mass detention of Muslims and was named a finalist for its colossal FinCEN Files investigation into the global banking industry.
