This fall, Meldgie’s Diner in Point Judith got a new owner.

Now, on Sunday, the Narragansett institution will officially have a new name — “Tommy D’s.”

But for new owner Tom Durkin, he wants to assure people that not much will actually change at all.

After all, he grew up in the area — and in typical Rhode Island fashion, it was the site of his first job.

“It was Ideal Market back then,” said Durkin, who balances his real estate business with now running the diner.

“I have very fond memories. That’s what really drew me back,” said Durkin.

According to Durkin, most of Meldgie’s staff has stayed on, and his manager is in the real estate world as well.

“We’re still pretty much the same — it’s the same folks running it, the food’s the same,” said Durkin. “And on Sundays, 90% of the parking lot is URI students coming in for breakfast.”

A new year might be just around the corner, but at Tommy D’s, 2023 won’t look too much different than 2022.
