It is summertime, and we Rhode Islanders take our seafood delights very seriously.

Summer seafood can make the weekend. It can make the summer.
We are not sure if it is due to tariffs or supply chain issues — we say in jest — but it seems that at a few too many seafood restaurants, the proverbial bang for the buck has greatly diminished over the past few years.
Clam cakes often have little in the way of clams and in recent years lobster rolls have gotten smaller, the meat more minced than chunks and the cost has gone through the the proverbial roof.
But during a recent week-long visit to Newport, we found "it" — the holy grail — the perfect lobster roll.
Five lobster rolls were downed that week, and even before the Newport trip, lobster rolls are a regular dietary delight, depending on personal budget.
Perfection was found at the most unusual location. It was not at a fancy Newport eatery. It was found at a shack - literally a shack.
We found perfection at the Newport Chowder Company, which is located in the most unsuspecting location —262 Thames Street. Right in the middle of the action yet a hidden gem at the same time.
It is an outdoor venture complete with highboy tables and picnic tables. But you don’t go there for the cushy seats. You go for the perfection of the lobster rolls.
Ginormous chunks of lobster. Our lobster, not loaded with celery fillers, was plentiful and it was the 4oz version and it was a reasonable $24. The price was a bargain compared to the rest of the lobster roll world. There is also a 6oz version — the good life on steroids.
The lobster is not brutally chopped like it came from a hibachi-trained chef at some high-priced restaurants, who mangles the meat—you know who you are.
For those who lost faith in value, a trip to Newport Chowder Company will restore your faith.
It is worth the trip.
