RI College to Host Gerontology Mini-Conference

Issues surrounding aging populations are increasingly vital, and Rhode Island College will be holding a gerontology mini-conference this month that is open to the public.

“Food, Fitness, and Falls Among Older Adults” will be held April 27, from 8:30am to noon in the Faculty Center’s Main Dining Room.

Participants can learn about special nutritional needs of seniors, explore fitness issues for this population and learn about the incidence, costs, at-risk population and medical issues associated with falling.

Helpful tips for all ages

Other topics include fall-proofing a home, exercises to improve leg strength, identifying resources and referral points for at-risk elders, and understanding the holistic theoretical approach to wellness and aging gracefully.

Speakers include Carol Cummings, Asst Professor of Health and Physical Education at RIC, Patrick McCormick, PT at Vanderbilt Rehabilitation Center at Newport Hospital, Lisa Procter, holistic counselor and certified geriatric care manager, and Jean Tapley, Wellness Consultant with Amica Mutual Insurance Company.

Rhode Island College established a geronotology center in 1979, and offers a BS in health education with a minor in the field.
