5 Live Music Musts—May 30, 2014

The Wailers
A sure sign of summer in Rhode Island is the start of the Newport Concert Series at the Newport Yachting Center. Tomorrow night, the groove is easy as the season opens with Bob Marley’s backup band, The Wailers. It’s our top choice on a busy weekend of Rock, Jazz, Classical and Reggae on “5 Live Music Musts.”

The Wailers in Newport

Rusted Root and The Wailers open the Newport Concert Series tomorrow night, May 31. Bob Marley's band will be performing the complete Legend album, on the 30th anniversary of the best-selling Reggae release of all time. Get to the Point Stage at 4:30PM for The Ravers, and the main stage for Boston’s Adam Ezra Group at 6PM. Rusted Root and The Wailers follow. Tickets start at 39.50.

The Feelies at the Met

The Feelies are one of those great indie bands from an earlier time (late 70s-early 80s) who received enormous critical praise but never quite broke through commercially. If you like punk rhythms and REM style guitar grooves, you’ll love the Feelies. They don’t tour that often these days, so be sure not to miss this one. They play The Met tomorrow night, May 31 - doors at 8PM, show is at 9PM, tickets are $17 in advance, $20 at the door.

Greg Abate Quintet at Chan's

Rhode Island’s own world class jazz saxophonist Greg Abate will bring his quintet to Chan's tomorrow night along with special guest baritone sax man Gary Smulyan. Abate has been recognized with numerous awards including most recently as Best Jazz Act of 2014 by Motif Magazine. Jazz fans won't want to miss this one. Tickets are only $15 for the 8PM show.

Yo Yo Ma at Veterans

Living legend and 15 time Grammy winner Yo Yo Ma will join the Rhode Island Philharmonic this Sunday, June 1 for a very special performance. The revered cellist will solo in a performance of Elger’s Cello Concerto op.85, widely considered one of his signature pieces. The Orchestra will also perform Béatrice et Bénédict: Overture by Berlioz along with Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. Tickets range from $35 to $1000 and the concert starts at 7PM.
