Benros, Arffa, Forbes, and Martin: 16 Who Made a Difference in 2016

The former restaurant owners protested Robbins' $3 million plus in tax credits awarded from Raimondo and the Commerce Corporation.
Rosinha Benros, Phyllis Arffa, Lee Forbes, and Deena Martin had all owned restaurants at Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket — and all went out of business at the hands of developer and landlord Lance Robbins.

So when the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation announced this fall that Robbins’ Urban Smart Growth would be getting $3.6 million in tax credits to expand loft construction at the location, they decided they were not going to be silent.

“This just isn’t fair,” said Benros, who said she “wished she had sued” Robbins after what she had experienced. Martin, who had owned the Bread Lab, called Robbins “morally bankrupt.”  And Arffa, who moved her successful Blaze Restaurant from Hope Street to Pawtucket, left in debt after she said, “Robbins threatened to bankrupt me.”

They shared their stories and protested the deal, which Commerce said they were “going to review” — but appear to not have done much to stop anything.  But the former business owners have showed that small Rhode Island business owners were not going to stand idly by after going what they went through — and after GoLocal uncovered that in Los Angeles, Robbins was cited with 105 health and building-code violations, piled up 32 convictions, paid a $1 million settlement, just to name a few of his legal problems, according to press reports.

"I abide by golden rule and I start to question, 'Is this person I want to be involved with?' I think that in Rhode Island, that we have values. And we need to be clear on what those values are and which ones we want so desperately to be characterized with," said Commerce board member Karl Wadensten.

The question is, will the powers that be in Rhode Island now listen.  Because it is clear that Rhode Islanders will not be silent.
