Bright Smile DIY

For many of us, fall means back to school and back to work so why not brighten and whiten that smile? We found some stellar products and services to make your grin gleam and fit every budget.

Salon Smiles $$$$

A local Rhode Island company is offering a whitening spa service through various salons that will make your teeth up to six shades lighter in 30 minutes. Salon Smiles, based in North Providence and run by President Karen Melillo, R.D.H. (Resident Dental Hygienist) serves up a quick and easy way to lighten, whiten and brighten using LED light, peroxide and a tray that molds to the teeth to apply pressure and ensure maximum brightening. Prices start around $90. For more information, visit http://www.salonsmiles.org.

Brush $$$

One of the best ways to naturally brighten is to use a battery-operated or electric toothbrush for maximum pressure and timing. Brushing two minutes each time you brush (2-3 times a day) will ensure ultimate cleaning and stain fighting protection. Oral-B Professional Care 1000 Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush ($70, Bed Bath and Beyond, Providence Place Mall) provides a powerful clean that will polish every one of your teeth. Double the power with whitening toothpaste like Arm & Hammer Advance White Brilliant Sparkle ($9, drugstores).

Do-It-Yourself Whitening $$

Whitening kits abound at your local pharmacy or drugstore and for a moderate price you can get those pearly whites even pearlier. Crest 3D White Whitestrips Vivid Dental Whitening Kit ($32, CVS) is a 10-day treatment that will yield results in as little as three days. Luster Premium White products (available at Target, $7-$45) whiten in one hour, one weekend or one week, whatever fits your schedule!

Old School $

For just about $.50 (yes 50 CENTS!) you can whiten your teeth everyday at home with good ol’ baking soda. Arm & Hammer Baking Soda, in its famous orange box, is a sure-fire way to remove grime and stains from your teeth. It may taste a bit funky but it really does work and it is super cost-effective. To use, simply wet your toothbrush and put some soda right on the brush. Brush for about one minute and rinse. You can use baking soda a few times a week or every day.
