NEW: Cicilline Highly Rated "Power" Gay Person in U.S.

One of the first openly gay mayors of a major U.S. city, current RI Congressman David Cicilline has been named to Out Magazine’s annual “Power 50” list, which ranks the most influential gay men and women in the country.

Cicilline is tied for No. 11 with two of his House colleagues, Representatives Tammy Baldwin (WI-49) and Jared Polis (CO-36).  It is the first appearance on the list for Cicilline, who became the fourth openly gay member of Congress in January. He had previously been mayor of RI's capital city, Providence, before successfully seeking the U.S. Congressional First District seat in 2010.

The magazine praised Cicilline, Baldwin, Polis and Massachusetts Representative Barney Frank for reintroducing the Respect for Marriage Act in an attempt to repeal Defense of Marriage Act.

Frank, who checked in at No. 5 on the list, was the only elected official ranked ahead of Cicilline.

The rest of the top five included Apple COO/Acting CEO Tim Cook followed by talk show hosts Ellen DeGeneres, Anderson Cooper and Rachel Maddow.

Among the well-known names on the list, Cicilline ranks ahead of actor Neil Patrick Harris, blogger Perez Hilton, talk show host Suze Orman, media kingpins Nick Denton and Matt Drudge and musician Adam Lambert.
