John Ghiorse: Too Early to Hype this "Blizzard" -- Plan for 12 Inches on Tuesday

John Ghiorse
Strange winter, huh? But typical for New England. After that fabulously warm February, we thought we might be able to slide right into spring. Nah, winter has returned with a vengeance and now we might be facing the biggest snowstorm of the winter at many locations here in Southern New England.

Officially here in Providence we had a 14 inches in January and a 12 inches in February, this one should be in that league with the potential to go higher.

For the past several days, just about all of the weather data has been pointing to a major East Coast storm that should form late Monday off the coast of the Carolinas and move by Southern New England Tuesday, reaching the Gulf of Maine and Canadian Maritimes by Wednesday.

Of course, track is all important and there is still some wiggle room. But very little. Several inches of snow seem assured. The wiggle comes in regarding the potential for some change or mix to sleet and rain during the middle of the storm especially from Providence on south and east toward the coast if the storm center tracks close to the coast. If that happens, snow amounts would be less.

But it is far too early to pin those details down. Best advice now is to plan for a foot or more of snow beginning late Monday night or early Tuesday and winding down as squalls or flurries late Tuesday night into Wednesday.

As later data comes in tonight and tomorrow, I will be able to put more of those details into the forecast.
