Musings While on Cloud Nine: Late Summer Weather & Who's Most Rhode Island
Just Thinking …

Seems to me by now most of us have heard all the arguments on both sides of the Ground Zero Mosque controversy and know pretty much where we stand on the issue. Isn’t it time to tone down the rhetoric and name-calling? Guess it’s a sign of the times, as every issue seems to bring out the harshness and vitriol. Is there no civility any more?
Summer’s not over yet (we still have some warm, humid days on the way) but statistics mark this as one of the warmest in recent memory. Yes, we’ve had only one “heat wave” (three or more consecutives days with temps of 90 degrees or higher), that being from July 4-7. But it has been the persistence of warm, humid days that has been remarkable. Since June 21 (summer solstice) we’ve had 11 days 90 degrees or over, 43 days of 80-89 degrees, and only 9 days with highs of 70-79. Prior to Tuesday, the last day the mercury did not reach 70 or higher was June 11!
Weather trivia!
Weather Trivia Question: On average how many days do we have each year with a high temperature 90 degrees or higher?
The last time I looked the Red Sox were closer to the 4th place Blue Jays than to either the Yankees or Rays.
Even though we’ve had a summer full of sunshine, wouldn’t you say that one gloomy, rainy day is about enough? It gets real old and hard to take when it stretches to three or four or more, especially when you’re at a beach rental in Narragansett or on the Cape.
Speaking of going out to eat. Isn’t Rhode Island number one in the nation for the most and best restaurants per square mile? Then again I’ve never been to Butte, Montana or Shickshinny, Pennsylvania (although I did drive by once a long time ago!).
Politics
Are the political races running out of steam or is it just my perception? Seems like it all started a gazillion years ago and as primary day approaches it feels like everyone is suffering a malaise from too much too early. Then again, most of us tune out in the summer and perk up again once Labor Day is behind us. Once the fields narrow after the primaries, the hype should ramp up heading toward November.
After a very slow start, the tropics are beginning to come to life. Look for activity to really pick up from here on in. Danielle is just the first in a string that could see several storms on the map at the same time over the next few weeks.
Glad to see the Warwick Mall opening up once again after being inundated by the Big Flood. Not that it’s a big deal to me, but does anyone know why it’s taking so long for Macy’s to reopen?
We all know that NFL pre season records are meaningless but a terrible showing in the pre season could be significant. Since 1990 of the 35 teams that have had 0-4 records in the pre season, 30 have missed the playoffs. In 1990 the Patriots went 0-4 in the pre season and had their worst season ever, 1 win and 15 losses. Seems that a perfect pre season is less indicative. Since 1990, of the 42 teams that have gone 4-0 in pre season about half (19) have missed the playoffs.
I love GoLocal’s feature on which candidate is Most Rhode Island but doesn’t it have a few missing categories? Like 1 point for each Del’s consumed per week, 5 points for knowing where the Arena used to be or, perhaps, 10 points if they have a cousin named “Shevil” who lives in “Newpor”. Maybe, 15 points if they know a waiter at Twin Oaks that can, you know, “get them in”. C’mon, let’s really put these folks to the test!
Weather Trivia Answer: 10. This year we’ve had 13 so far. 1 each in April, May and August. 2 in June and 8 in July.
Sorry, gotta go … Time for breakfast and I can smell the coffee brewing and bacon sizzling at T’s in EG all the way from here.
