The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch for Rhode Island and southern New England through Tuesday night. 

FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING...

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.

* WHERE...Portions of Massachusetts, including the following areas, Central Middlesex MA, Eastern Essex MA, Eastern Norfolk MA, Eastern Plymouth MA, Northern Bristol MA, Northern Middlesex MA, Northern Worcester MA, Southeast Middlesex MA, Southern Bristol MA, Southern Plymouth MA, Southern Worcester MA, Suffolk MA, Western Essex MA, Western Norfolk MA and Western Plymouth MA.

Portions of Rhode Island, including the following areas, Bristol RI, Eastern Kent RI, Newport RI, Northwest Providence RI, Southeast Providence RI and Western Kent RI.

* WHEN...Through this evening.

* IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
  - Periods of showers and thunderstorms with torrential rainfall will introduce a flood threat this morning into early afternoon. 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rainfall are forecast along
    the I-95 corridor from Providence to Boston with locally higher amounts of 3+ inches possible.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

 

NWS' Forecast for Week 

Today: Showers and thunderstorms before 3pm, then a chance of showers between 3pm and 5pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Patchy fog before noon. High near 82. Southwest wind 11 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. West wind around 11 mph.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 84. West wind 13 to 16 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 65. West wind 6 to 9 mph.

Thursday: A chance of showers, mainly after 3pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Southwest wind 5 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Thursday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 65. South wind around 14 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 82. West wind around 14 mph.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 60. West wind 6 to 13 mph.
