RI Municipal Police Academy Shut Down Due to COVID Outbreak

The Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy has been forced to shut down training activities due to an outbreak of COVID.

GoLocal has learned that at least six trainees and staffers have tested positive.

The academy is in the midst of a class. GoLocal has learned that the Academy will conclude activities and attendees will receive the certificates.

The graduation ceremony scheduled for December 17 has been canceled and will not be rescheduled.

The Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy was established in 1969 to train and certify all municipal police officers.

Both the City of Providence and Rhode Island State Police operate their own academies.

The Rhode Island Police Officers Commission on Standards and Training (POST), with the approval of the Commissioner of Public Safety, establishes the courses of training and sets rules and regulations relative to the education, physical standards, and personal character of candidates and trainees.
