The 50 Greatest Living Rhode Islanders - 2020 Version

L-R Vieira, Crenca, Ghiorse, Evans, Davis
GoLocal has updated the list of the 50 Greatest Living Rhode Islanders - the list was first compiled in 2016 and updated again in 2018.

The list has been brought up to date as one member has died and another is being removed for his unexplained relationship with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and Epstein's recently arrested co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell. Epstein and Maxwell are accused by more than 50 young women of sexual abuse.

Sadly, Howard Ben Tré, a world leader in innovating cast glass as a sculptural medium, passed away at the age of 70. His work has been exhibited at more than 100 museum and public collections worldwide -- and his studio was located in Pawtucket. His art has been on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, to name a few.

Also, Ira Magaziner has been removed for his ties to Epstein and Maxwell and his repeated refusal to answer questions about his relationship with the two -- he traveled with them repeatedly on Epstein's so-called "Lolita Express;' Magaziner's private cell phone number was in Epstein's "Little Black Book."

Shortly, after GoLocal exposed Magaziner's travels with Epstein and Maxwell, he was replaced as the Chief Executive of the Clinton Health Access Initiative.

The additions to the list are individuals who are outstanding Rhode Islanders who have done extraordinary things to enhance the state and even the world.

In developing the initial list in 2016, GoLocal reached out to many of Rhode Island’s experts and influencers in a range of fields to ask them who are the greatest living Rhode Islanders. The criteria are defined, but of course, have elements that are amorphous. First, they need to have lived and work in Rhode Island — they need a significant connection.

The new members of the list are:

Ambassador J. William Middendorf and civil rights leader Ray Rickman.

To be selected for the list, one simply could not have just attended college in Rhode Island and then gone to do great things nor could they have worked just a small portion of their careers. Thus, former Brown University President Vartan Gregorian who served as President of Brown does not qualify, not does Family Guy creator and RISD grad Seth MacFarlane.

To be a living great Rhode Islander - this must be your state in residence -- or spirit.

How "Greatest" Were Chosen

As stated, the list of greatest living Rhode Islanders was first published in 2016 and updated in 2018. Developing the list was a challenge, with so many talented and accomplished Rhode Islanders.

Those bigger than life leaders —like political titans Bruce Sundlun, John Chafee, Claiborne Pell are not easy to replace. And, some of our most talented individuals have moved out of Rhode Island and are now living and working elsewhere pursuing their amazing careers. They are no longer connected to Rhode Island.

What was refreshing was how many of Rhode Island’s greats are tied to our colleges and universities -- a cornerstone to Rhode Island's success. Each person on the list is distinct and very few on the Greatest Living list are also on GoLocal's biannual 50 Wealthiest and Most Influential. Greatness does not equate exclusively to wealth.

Some on this list are well known in the state, but many have greater awareness in their field outside of Rhode Island. The list is meant to spark discussions about what we value and how excellence is achieved.

Finally, please share your thoughts (respectfully) as everyone on this list deserves recognition and has made great contributions -- they may not make your list, but they did make ours.

Enjoy the greatness -- as pound for pound, no state may have more talent.
