A year after significant lockdown restrictions during the pandemic, Rhode Islanders are itching to travel.

And while some are looking to venture to such locales as Aruba and even Mongolia, a good number just want to stay local and take advantage of the summer fun that the Ocean State — and New England — has to offer.

GoLocal asked Rhode Islanders where they are planning to go this summer — and this is what they had to say, below.

More than 47.7 million Americans are expected to take to the nation’s roadways and skies this Independence Day weekend (July 1–5), as travel volumes are expected to nearly fully recover to pre-pandemic levels.

“Travel is in full swing this summer, as Americans eagerly pursue travel opportunities they’ve deferred for the last year-and-a-half,” said Lloyd Albert, Senior Vice President, Public and Government Affairs, AAA Northeast. “We saw strong demand for travel around Memorial Day and the kick-off of summer, and all indications now point to a busy Independence Day to follow.”

RI International Airport Expands List of Direct Flights

The summer travel season has officially begun and the Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) has announced its summer schedule for the Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport (PVD) featuring nonstop routes to east coast destinations and major airline hubs providing connections throughout the nation.

And airlines are betting on post-pandemic travel — United Airlines has ordered 270 new aircraft and plans to reconfigure its existing fleet, the company recently announced, as part of the airline’s pivot towards higher-paying premium travel as the hard hit industry explores ways to recover from Covid-19, reported Forbes.

Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport travelers are reminded to allow ample time to check bags at airline counters and for Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security procedures during high volume travel times, such as early morning flights and holidays.  Visitors to the airport are reminded that federal law requirement guidelines indicate that face masks must be worn in airports and on the aircraft.

PVD Cares Kits including a face mask, hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes remain available at the airport information desk and at all airline counters.
