EXCLUSIVE: Providence City Democratic Chairman Resigns

Kenneth Richardson has resigned as Chairman of the Providence Democratic City Committee effective June 30.

In a letter delivered to Mayor Angel Taveras Monday, Richardson wrote that he was stepping down from his role as Chairman of the Committee because he and his wife, Susan, were in the process of purchasing a new condo in Warwick.

“We are both leaving the neighborhood we were born and raised in and the transition process is giving us mixed emotions to say the least,” he wrote.

“I do not plan on moving until the summer and I will continue to work in my capacity as Chairman to fully implement the important and aggressive agenda that our new Executive Committee has created: raising money, hiring staff and making Providence stronger,” Richardson said. “It is very important to me that, by the time I leave, we had adequate funding and a new executive director in place for the next Chair.”

Committee aiming to become relevant again

Richardson, who also serves on the city’s Retirement Board, was named Chairman in January after leading the Ward 5 committee since 2006. He was tasked with restoring relevance to a Committee that overwhelmingly voted to endorse Steven Costantino in his run for Mayor last summer. Costantino eventually finished a distant third.

In his resignation later, Richardson said he was proud to have led the only ward committee that endorsed Taveras in the Primary. He said he looks forward to continuing to support Taveras and the city moving forward.

“As the expressions goes, you can take me out of Providence but you can’t take Providence out of me,” he said. “I will continue to work hard and do everything I can to support you and the great city that raised me.”

The Mayor’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
