Newport Voter Turnout "Steady," Higher Turnout Expected

State Senator Louis DiPalma (D - District 12)
Voting turnout has "been steady" at the Newport Public Library, according to State Senator Louis DiPalma, who has been at the polling location "since 7 AM this morning."

"There's been a good response so far," said DiPalma, who was with Senate President M. Teresa Paiva-Weed at 9:45 AM.  "Newport might be seeing a higher turnout than expected throughout the day with the casino vote."

"It's been steady here, but by no means crowded," said DiPalma.

DiPalma noted that Paiva Weed, who is facing Republican Mike Smith, would be making the rounds to all seven Newport polling locations early.

Casino the Big Question

The Newport table games referendum was defeated on the ballot in Newport in 2012, and is once again before voters this year.

Smith has been a vocal opponent to expanding gaming options at Newport Grand.  Paiva Weed is also on the record opposing the referendum, citing the Newport City Council's decision to reject a host agreement with the prospective new casino owners.
