It was a political showdown.

After the Senate leadership-supported ban on extended gun magazine legislation failed in the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senate President Dominick Ruggerio and the other members of the leadership used a rule change and bypassed the committee, setting off an emotional protest by gun rights advocates.

Ruggerio and House Speaker Joe Shekarchi have blocked the passage of the number one priority of gun safety advocates -- a ban on assault rifles.
