Aaron Guckian is the Republican candidate for Lt. Governor Here is what he has to say.

1. What do you believe is the biggest political issue of our time?

My biggest political issue of our time is people holding office who are unqualified for their positions. Rhode Island has a Governor who was elected Lt. Governor and then elevated to his current position and Lt. Governor who was appointed to her position. The Lt. Governor, in particular, has proven herself ill-equipped for the job. At this pivotal point in Rhode Island’s history, I know I am the right leader with the right business qualifications to listen to the concerns of all the residents of Rhode Island and get things done.

2. What can we do to improve the RI economy?

I want to be part of an economy that provides opportunities to our residents and incoming businesses. This starts with a strategic plan for reducing the tax burden on small businesses and creating opportunities for workers in our manufacturing economy to be retrained for the high-paying jobs that the new tech-centered economy is bringing to us.
As Lt Governor, I am committed to working with the Governor and the Commerce Corporation to be as proactive as possible to making sure that Rhode Island is as attractive as possible to all businesses looking to relocate to our great state.

3. What is the biggest challenge we face as a state?

There are so many, but my top priority is making sure that the government serves the people of the state. As I am talking to voters, very often I hear that they do not feel their government is working for them. My vision is to create a statewide help center to ensure that every single Rhode Islander has the help they need to get access to any services they need.

4. Why are you running?

I am running because I feel that Rhode Island does not have leadership that can take this state to “New Heights” in our economy, our infrastructure and our educational system. That is my platform…taking the State that I Iove to New Heights so we can be a shining example of success in all of these critical areas.

I have an MBA from Johnson & Wales and a successful career in finance before joining the Rhode Island Foundation as a Development Officer, where I was able to see first-hand the need for community support throughout the State.

As the former Special Assistant to Governor Don Carcieri and chairperson of Warwick Sewer Authority, I understand the importance of infrastructure and preparedness. The Lt Governor is responsible for the State’s Emergency Management System. My experience has shown me the importance of preparedness and regular meetings of the team, vs my elevated opponent who has not held the traditional monthly meetings.

5. Who are your heroes?

My parents- my father was a plumber, part of a union, and my mother was a respiratory therapist. They instilled in me the value of hard work, integrity and faith.
