Mighty Have Fallen in New England Basketball — No Powers Are Going to the Big Dance

Ernie D. led the Friars to the Final Four in 1973
Dr. James Naismith is rolling over in his grave. New England, the birthplace of basketball is becoming an irrelevant desert for college basketball.

In New England, none of the historic powers are going dancing in 2019. There are three teams from New England playing in the NCAA tournament and each of them won their league’s automatic bids -- no at-large bids given to a New England university.

Only three New England teams, the University of Vermont, Northeastern University and Yale University, are going to dance this year in the tournament.

Ivy League champs Yale are a #14 seed and Vermont won the America East Conference and is a #13 seed.

Northeastern is also a #13 seed.

All in all, not exactly a power region.

UConn had been a national power
Remember when UConn won national championships?

Between 1987 and 2014, New England teams went to the Final Four seven times, and thanks to UConn, won four National Championships.

Providence in 1987

Massachusetts in 1996

Connecticut in 1999 --  National Champs

Connecticut in 2004 -- National Champs

Connecticut in 2009

Connecticut in 2011 -- National Champs

PC Streak Ended

Providence College’s streak of five consecutive tournaments ended in the Big East tourney at the hands of Villanova on Thursday. They return a young and talented team and may be back in 2019-20.

Perennial national power UConn is in its ongoing rebuilding. The Huskies haven’t been to the tournament in three years. This year UConn finished with a losing record 16-17 and a horrific conference record of 6-18, in the conference no one can even name.

UMass, who went to the final four in the 1995-96 season, finished 11-21 overall and 4-14 in a weak Atlantic 10 conference.

The URI Rams are out. The Rams had gone back-to-back and they looked to have had an outside chance to upset their way into the tournament by winning the Atlantic 10 Conference, but the Rams ran out of gas against St. Bonaventure in the semis.

Then, there is the once proud Boston College program — in the 1980s and 1990s they were a Big Dance regular -- but wer 14-17 overall and 5-13 in the ACC in 2019. BC lost this season to Providence, Hartford and IUPUI.

Who is IUPUI?

The Eagles have not been to the NCAA tournament since 2009.

Remember Holy Cross?

Do you remember that Holy Cross was a national power? From the 1940s through to the 1970s they were a leading team in the country. The Crusaders were a regular in the NCAA and NIT tournaments and won both. In 1947 and 1948 they went to the Final Four and were the 1947 National Champions.

The program created superstars — Bob Cousy, Tommy Heinsohn, and Ronnie Perry.

They had a losing season in 2015-16, 15-20, but got red hot in the Patriot League tournament and grabbed a spot on the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2006-07.

One of the longest droughts in the region has been Brown University. Brown has not been to the NCAA tournament since 1986.

Dartmouth played in the NCAA Final Four in 1942 and 1944, but it has been awfully quiet in Hanover since the WWII era.
