The Red Sox on Sunday traded 3B/DH Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, in exchange for LHP Kyle Harrison, RHP Jordan Hicks, minor league OF James Tibbs III, and minor league RHP Jose Bello.

Harrison has been optioned to Triple-A Worcester.

The Red Sox and Devers have been in a season-long battle over what position he would play.

The trade sent shockwaves through Major League Baseball. It was a blockbuster deal that not only ended Devers’ era as the face of the Red Sox but also dramatically reshaped the rosters and futures of both franchises.

Devers, just 28 and still in his prime, had been the last remaining player from Boston’s 2018 World Series championship team. He’d signed a massive 10-year, $313.5 million contract extension in 2023, a move that seemed to cement his legacy in Boston. But tensions simmered beneath the surface. The trouble began in spring training, when the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman to a three-year deal and asked Devers to shift from third base, his longtime position, to designated hitter. Devers reluctantly agreed, but the transition was rocky, and his frustration grew.

Stress increased in May when first baseman Triston Casas suffered a season-ending injury. The front office approached Devers about filling in at first base, but he declined, insisting the team should find another solution. His public comments and private frustrations with chief baseball officer Craig Breslow created a rift that became impossible to ignore.

On the day of the trade, Devers homered in a win over the Yankees, helping Boston complete a sweep.
