SUCCEED WITH STYLE: Formally Speaking

Dress should be appropriate
While on a recent trip to Florida, I found myself in the midst of a group that looked like they could use a lesson or two. While sitting across from my hotel, I noticed an interesting crowd forming. Everyone was in formal attire. As more and more guests arrived, it became clear that the event was a Navy Ball. While watching these people, I was reminded of how important it is to represent yourself in the most positive light regardless of the occasion.

Although several couples were dressed appropriately, I was shocked by what the many of the guests especially the younger ones were wearing. Formal events can be a quandary for many people. With the season of holiday balls and formal charity events looming, I wanted to share some tips to help you dress (and act) the part during these special occasions.

1. Dress to the level of formality. If the event is a Formal Ball, a long gown is required for women and a tux for men. A short knit dress and a business suit are not appropriate.

2. Choose an outfit that is authentic to you and is comfortable. You want the outfit to suit you. You don’t want to look like the outfit is wearing you.

3. Choose a gown that is sleek and elegant. Skip the Cinderella look.

4. Guys- make sure you rent or buy a quality tux that fits well. Add your own touches- like an interesting cufflink or a colorful bow tie and cumber bun combination.

5. Make sure your clutch and shoes coordinate.

6. Wear appropriate undergarments and take a back view of your outfit in the mirror before leaving the house. More people see you from the back than from the front.

7. Don’t smoke at the event or even entering the event. Not only will you smell it is unbecoming.

8. Don’t chew gum.

9. Practice your introductions. Always know which person to introduce first and give a strong handshake.

10. Be mindful of your posture. Even if you are nervous, walk with confidence and stand up straight.

11. Have cash on hand in the event the bar is cash only.
